Abstract Before the advent of western education, indigenous form of education existed in which boys took after their father's trade while girls were trained to become successful house-wives. This paper examines the education of women as a necessary tool for enhancing sustainable national development. The concepts of education and sustainable national development as well as contributions of women to national development are discussed. Hindrances to women education and national development are highlighted while counselling strategies to be used in reducing the hindrances like Mass Mobilization, etc are discussed. Suggestions such as discouragement of early marriages and award of scholarships to desirous girls and women among others are made with the hope that if genuinely implemented, the hindrances to women education and national development will be greatly reduced if not totally eradicated.

Abstract This paper discussed the 21st century challenges and innovations in school's guidance and counselling programme. It looked at an overview of the concept of counselling as well as the objectives of counselling in Nigerian educational system. Challenges in the School Counselling programme as highlighted include: inadequate trained personnel, inadequate funding, poor attitude of school heads and teachers among others. Basic counseling methods namely: individual and group formats are examined. E-counselling which is one of the major innovations in counseling is critically examined. Recommendations such as a the provision of adequate funds through various education Intervention Funds such as education Trust Fund (E.T.F) and TETFUND among others should be utilized. The paper conclude that since the only permanent things in life is change, innovations which imply improvement and change should be embraced for the good of all.

Abstract The nature of Nigerian educational system which is experiencing stress as a result of student population explosion and the complexities of modern society which has led to increased rate of students' acts of indiscipline such as examination malpractice, disobedience to schools rules and regulations, riots, indecent dressing and cultism-just to mention a few, do not promote positive school climate. This paper reviewed the various professional counselling services required in Nigerian educational system such as academic counselling, vocational counselling, personal social counselling and orientation service panacea for promoting positive school climate. Recommendations such as posting of trained guidance counsellors to all schools, effective guidance of students in their choice of subjects and making the school environment interesting and comfortable for effective teaching and learning are made for the proper training of students who will be future leaders with good characters.

Abstract The nature of Nigerian school system which is experiencing stress as a result of students' population explosion and the complexities of modern society which has led to exhibition of anti-social behaviours such as increased rate of disobedience to school's rules and regulations, riots, indecent dressing, examination malpractice, truancy, wrong choice of subject combinations, poor study habit, and cultism-just to mention a few, required that guidance and counselling programme should be established in schools to re-orientate the students so that they can fulfill their life's ambition and live happily in the society. This paper looks at the roles of the classroom teacher who by virtue of his long stay with the pupils or students can identify those having problems, gives minor or simple counselling and refers the matter to specialists. Recommendations were made on how to ensure that the school guidance programme achieves more success. The paper concludes that the challenges are enormous and demanding and should not be left for the guidance counsellor alone.

Abstract The mass media have been useful to the public in different ways: viz a vis, as instruments for political awareness, public enlightenment, education, information, conflict resolution, national integration and entertainment. Through the mass media, a large number of people can be contacted at relatively low cost in time and money. As Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa but with about seventy percent of her populace living in the rural areas as well as high illiteracy rate, the role of the mass media in mobilizing grass- roots support for guidance and counselling programmes in the country cannot be over-emphasized. This paper looks at various ways through which the mass media (radio, television, films and posters, among others) can help in mobilizing grass-roots support for the success of Guidance and Counselling Programmes in Nigeria. The use of "trado-modern" means of communication was emphasized in order to achieve a higher level of success Recommendations such as the need for regular supply of electricity, as well as for government subsidizing the cost of these gadgets, were made so that they could be easily affordable to all.
